A toy dog is a very small dog kept as a pet, as compared to a very small working dog. Miniature toy dog breeds are primarily bred as companion dogs. Many toy dog breeds are ancient breeds from Asia. Many of the toy dog breeds today are much smaller and lighter than they were in the past. Many generations of selective breeding resulted in some of the toy dog breeds reduce from 30 pounds to now weigh fewer than 7 pounds.
In defining the Toy Dog Group of dogs, there is some disagreement whether the size of the dog should also be considered in conjunction with the dogs function and temperament.
The use of the word "toy" to describe small dogs that belong to a toy breed is inaccurate. One should not suggest that the breed comes in different sizes EG. "toy Chihuahua"; all Chihuahuas are toy dogs. (However, some breeds do come in different sizes, such as Poodles, which come in standard, miniature, and toy varieties).
